NEW YORK - "Desperate Housewives" may be ABC's most popular show on the small screen, but "Lost" is the winner on the REALLY small screen.
After one month of offering downloads of ABC's two favorite shows for viewing on iPods, "Lost" has sold the most, said Stephen McPherson, ABC entertainment president. He had no sales figures, but Apple has already said it has sold more than a million copies of ABC shows.
"Desperate Housewives" pulled in just under 26 million viewers on TV, while "Lost" had 20 million last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Contrary to the fears of some ABC affiliates, McPherson said he believed selling iPod downloads drives more viewers to the shows on ABC because it gives fans who may miss episodes a chance to keep up with intricate plotlines.
So far, the results contradict McPherson. Three "Desperate Housewives" episodes averaged 27.2 million viewers before the iPod announcement, while four episodes since then have pulled in 25.2 million viewers. For "Lost," it's 22.7 million pre-iPod and 20.7 million after downloads went on sale, Nielsen said.
At an industry function Tuesday, McPherson scoffed at the notion that "Desperate Housewives" had lost its edge in its second season. Producers have tried to have more interaction among the main characters, he said.
"We probably tried to tie up too many loose ends in the beginning," he said.
The first full week of the November ratings "sweeps" brought more of the same for the networks: CBS scored clear victories among all viewers and those aged 18 to 49. CBS and ABC had the 14 most popular prime-time shows last week; NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" ranked 15th.
For the week, CBS averaged 14.5 million viewers (9.3 rating, 15 share), ABC had 11.4 million viewers (7.3, 12), NBC 8.9 million (5.9, 9), Fox 7.5 million (4.7, 7), UPN 3.7 million (2.5, 4), the WB 3.6 million (2.4, 4) and Pax TV 620,000 (0.4, 1).
It was a big week for kids: Nickelodeon said its special "SpongeBob SquarePants" episode in which SpongeBob's pet snail Gary runs away was the most-watched program of the year among children aged 2 to 11, except for the Super Bowl.
Despite its prime-time troubles, NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race handily again, averaging 9.4 million viewers (6.6, 13). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 8.4 million viewers (5.9, 12) and the "CBS Evening News" 7.1 million (5.1, 10).
A ratings point represents 1,102,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 110.2 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
For the week of Nov. 7-13, their networks and viewerships: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 29.5 million; "Desperate Housewives," ABC, 25.9 million; NFL Monday Night Football: Indianapolis at New England, ABC, 21.9 million; "Without a Trace," CBS, 20.8 million; "Lost," ABC, 20 million; "Grey's Anatomy," ABC, 19.7 million; "CSI: NY, CBS, 19.2 million; "Survivor: Guatemala," CBS, 19 million; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 18.4 million; "NCIS," CBS, 17.8 million.
