POSITION SUMMARY
The Head of Software Engineering will be primarily responsible for managing a large team of ## managers and engineers building the suite of payment products. This individual must be technically savvy, maniacally focused on quality, driven by excellence, and one who loves to inspire a high-performance, innovative team. You will play an active role in all aspects of the software project lifecycle: requirements definition, technical assessment and design, project staffing decisions, prioritization, timeline management and establishment of software engineering processes.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manage software development teams in Shanghai including hiring, firing, budgeting, as well as infrastructure and process items required to execute on release objectives
• Lead the team by ensuring release objectives, dates, timelines, and plans are understood. Ensure the morale of the team is maintained by having regular interactions, and you are seen as the example to follow
• Manage the software development of multiple concurrent development projects
• Actively mentor team members to help them progress in their careers and achieve their maximum potential
• Ensure proper technical design, documentation best practices are followed
• Ensure adherence to engineering processes such as code reviews, source control, unit testing, and defect management
• Participate and provide feedback for requirement definitions and product reviews
• Interact with Product Management, QA, Operations and support teams to ensure proper coordination and implementation of development projects
• Proactively recommend process, tool, and development methodology improvements. Ensure all processes and procedures, both internal to the team and interaction with other teams, are followed and work to improve whenever appropriate and necessary.
• Coordinate to provide technical guidance/assistance to the team when necessary.
• Facilitate communication upward and across project teams including project status, justifications for variances and technical information that includes design and implementation objectives.
• Proactively identify issues that are likely and provide resolutions before they become actual issues.
• Serve as a focal point for other department on status as required
• Appropriately escalate any issues/concerns that require immediate attention from other affected parties
• Proactively identify requirements like hardware, software, tools, support etc. that will be required for the successful delivery of release objectives
• Identify, define, and coordinate the training needs of your team.
• Plan and execute a structure approach to enhancing the skill level and productivity levels of the team.
• Interact and coordinate with other teams for dependencies and ensure that there are no issues
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent
• Software Engineering expert with 10+ years of experience including 5+ years managing large (50+ people) teams developing large enterprise/mission critical applications.
• Hands-on experience developing mission critical, on-demand SaaS and/or web-based enterprise applications (a plus if experience in the financial services industry)
• Proven success as a software engineering manager with an exceptional track record of cross-team collaboration (engineering, production, QA) and on-time project delivery of multiple projects with multiple teams
• Proactive, results-oriented problem solver with tremendous attention to detail and the ability to meet aggressive deadlines
• Results-oriented, self-motivated team player and a strong leadership presence
• Proven ability to meet and exceed quantitative goals and consistently meet deadlines
• Strong written and oral communication and persuasion skills
• Strong business, project management and operational skills
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Outstanding quantitative/analytical skills and attention to detail
• Ability to communicate to all levels of the organization from senior management to engineers both internally and externally
• Strong technical skills covering web based development tools (Java/J2EE), scalable application development techniques to build large mission critical, and enterprise level applications
• Proven ability to hire and train a top performing software development team.
