[Training diary] Running in the rain (avg speed 5'24"/km, avg hr 160 bpm)
well, it is certainly not my first time running in the rain. But today I got a fairly big share of rain out there. After a heavy afternoon snack (in Jame's birthday party), it would be ideal to hit the road and take a good run in a Sunday afternoon. The weather was not cooperating however.
It rained heavily on our way driving home. "It seems you'll have to stay home now." My wife said, kinda mischievously. Luckily the heavy rain nearly stopped and I decided to put on my addidas zero and have a good 12k run. It was refreshing the first second I went outside. Not many cars on road, no pedestrian in sight. Dark clouds were far away, though still a bit menacing. The road was just for me. My feet were light, my heart beat was strong but controlled. I felt really cool, out there running. Several ships were anchored on sea. Water was calm. But horizon was blurred. While I was careful not to step into water ponds formed by rain, I began to feel a few rain drops. Not a big deal, I said to myself. It just added a bit of fun. Soon it became pouring, and wind suddenly blew like from nowhere. First time I felt the pain when rain drops were blown onto my body. I was immediately drenched. This was not cool. My eyesight was diminished to a few yards in front of me. On a positive thought, it was not bad for training: my addidas zero became heavier together with wet socks. And I didn't have to pay attention to footing to avoid water pits anymore.
On the way, surprisingly I saw a man running with his dog, a golden retriever. I knew what that runner was thinking (more or less), but what about that poor dog. It must have thought "damn, I need a hot bath and a juicy bone back home!"
Rain in summer is frivolous; the moment I managed to run thought the hardest part, it stopped. This was the most beautiful moment: air cool and fresh, and i was running alone. The last couple of kilometers, I ran with light feet, my legs were strong, and my last 200m was a fast finish. And I had a bowl of ice cream as desert after dinner. Life is good.
